Jane Mansbridge, Professor in Political Leadership and Democratic Values at Harvard University, is the recipient of the 2018 Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science. The jury picked Professor Mansbridge for “having shaped our understanding of democracy in its direct and representative forms with sharpness, deep involvement and feminist theory.”

Her ongoing distinguished career spanning more than 40 years has made groundbreaking contributions to our interpretation of the theory and practice of democracy, political representation and particularly feminist theory. She has very successfully interconnected academic research and feminist activism, for instance in pushing forward the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) of the US constitution. Moreover, she has brought prevailing and feminist approaches into dialogue to tackle big democratic questions. For her academic achievements and personal activism she has been a pioneering role model for women in political science.

The Johan Skytte Prize includes a 50,000 Euro prize money as well as a medal. It is regarded as the Nobel Prize equivalent in political sciences and is handed out annually to a researcher who has outstandingly contributed to the field.
