Short CV/Education and training

  • Meike Köhler is ICREA Senior Research Professor at the Catalan Institute of Paleontology (Barcelona, Catalonia) and head of the Group of Evolutionary Paleobiology of this centre. She is Associated Professor at the Department of Ecology at the University of Barcelona (UB). She studied Geology and Paleontology at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and made her PhD in Paleontology at the same university.

Her research area is Evolutionary Paleobiology of mammals, with a special focus on the evolution of ecosystems with limited energy resources such as islands. Her lines of research combine areas such as Evolutionary Biology, Physiology, and Evolutionary Ecology. She is especially interested in the evolution of demographic traits in general and the evolution of life histories in particular. In her research group, she introduced and developed mammalian osteohistology as a basic, yet hitherto little utilized tool to reconstruct life history traits, physiology and demographic traits in extant and fossil mammals.

She published about a hundred of peer-reviewed papers, many of them in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, Current Biology, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Proc. Natl. Acad. Science USA, Proc. Royal Soc., Brain Behaviour and Evolution, Am. Journal Phys. Anthrop., J. Human Evol. and others.

She was PI in 8 international and national research projects, amongst them ?Researching Hominid Origins Initiative? funded by the National Science Foundation US (NSF-BCS-0321893) as well as in projects funded by the Wenner Gren Foundation; she received 6 grants.
