Selected publications

  • Ponting, and A C Marques, "Extensive miRNA mediated crosstalk between lncRNAs and mRNA in mouse Embryonic Stem Cells", Genome Research 25, 655-666 (2015)

50% of lncRNAs studied induce changes in their targets in a miRNA-depedent manner.

  • J Y Tan, K W Vance, M A Varela, T Sirey, L M Watson, H J Curtis, M Marinello, S Alves, B R Steinkraus, S Cooper, T Nesterova, N Brockdorff, T A Fulga, A Brice, A Sittler, P L Oliver, M J Wood, C P Ponting and A C Marques "Cross-talking noncoding RNAs contribute to cell-specific neurodegeneration in SCA7", Nature Structural & Molecular Biology 21, 955–961 (2014). Regulatory crosstalk involving a miRNA, a lincRNA and the ATXN7-the SCA7 disease causing gene-explains tissue specific neurodegeneration in SCA7 patients.

  • A. C. Marques, J. Hughes, B. Graham, M. S. Kowalczyk, D. R HiggsTan and C. P. Ponting, "Chromatin signatures at transcriptional start sites separate two equally populated et distinct classes of intergenic long noncoding RNAs", Genome Biology (2013) 14 R131. Fifty percent of intergenic lncRNAs are transcribed from enhancers and the transcription of these enhancer associated molecules is correlated with enhanced levels of genes in their vicinity.

  • C. Kutter, S. Watt, K. Stefflova, M. D. Wilson, A. Goncalves, C. P. Ponting, D.T. Odom, A. C. Marques. "Rapid Turnover of Long Noncoding RNAs and the Evolution of Gene Expression", PLoS Genetics (2012), 8(7): e1002841. LincRNA transcription was frequently gained and lost during evolution and associates with neighboring gene expression levels.

  • A. C. Marques and Chris P. Ponting "Catalogues of mammalian long noncoding RNAs: modest conservation and incompleteness". Genome Biology (2009); 10(11):R124. LincRNA are conserved, albeit at lower levels than protein-coding genes. Detection of their sequence conservation requires appropriate tests.
