Short CV/Education and training

  • Prof. Lechuga is Full Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Head of group at ICN2. She has been Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Sciences, University of Campinas (Brazil) from 2013 to 2017 and Adjunct Professor at the Department of Physics and Technology, the Artic University of Norway (Norway) since 2012 to 2016. She has been at the forefront of the Photonic Biosensor area during more than fifteen years, making key contributions and opening new horizons in this technological field. Among her multiple works related to design and fabrication of new sensor devices, she has pioneering developments in photonics biosensors at international level as the integrated interferometers in silicon photonics, the magnetoplasmonic sensor, nanostructured plasmonic sensors or the waveguide microcantilever MEMS device, among others, together with the demonstration of the utility of these biosensor technologies for real bioanalytical applications (clinical diagnosis and environmental control mainly). In all these milestones, her contributions have been widely recognized and highly inspired by other researchers, as can be deduced by the number of publications, citations and continuous invited presentations at mayor International Conferences and at worldwide research centres and Universities since 2002. Her research work is summarised in around 230 publications, with an overall h-index of 44 (source: Google Scholar). This is a relevant h-index as compared to her technological counterparts as her work mainly falls under the engineering field category.

    Her international recognition in the Biosensors field is clearly indicated by the high number of invitations to deliver lectures at International and National conferences, Workshops, specialised schools and seminars, with an impressive track record of more than 350 invited presentations at worldwide level. She has deliver Plenary and Invited presentations in the most prestigious international conferences in her field of research as SPIE, MRS, Gordon, CLEO, or PITTCON, among others. She has also been the Chairperson of the EUROPTRODE Conference (major conference in her field), Director of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop, co-chairman of many symposiums in major conferences (as MRS, CLEO, LAOP), and co-director of an Advanced Summer School. She has been invited to serve at more of 80 Scientific Committee of Conferences, including the top ones in her field. Concerning scientific Journals Editorial activities, she is Associate Editor of IEEE Photonics Journal and the Journal of Optics and Laser Technology, and has been Guest Editor of special Issues for several Journals. The quality of her research has been recognised by several distinctions and awards, as the election as OSA Fellow, from one of the main international professional societies in her field, due to her significant research leadership and pioneering development of sensors. She has also received the Physics, Innovation and Technology Prize from the Spanish Royal Society of Physics (RSEF) and BBVA Foundation as a recognition of her trajectory in the technological development of biodevices for real applications. Moreover, she is co-inventor of several licensed patents, co-founder of two spin-offs and has mentored a high number of postdoc scientists and PhD and master students.
