Short CV/Education and training

  • Professor in energy systems planning, leading the Division on Energy and Climate Studies, Dept of Energy Technology. Deputy head of Dept of Energy Technology and Director of International Affairs for Brazil, KTH. Worked previously as sustainability expert at Swedish Energy Agency, and program manager for energy and climate at Stockholm Environment Institute. PhD in regional planning from KTH focusing on development and sustainability. Work characterized by a systems approach to problem analysis and resolution, and profound understanding of the role of infrastructure systems, policies, markets and entrepreneurship for sustainable development. Did research at MIT, IIASA and Univ of Tübingen. Recent research topics include bioenergy, energy access, energy efficiency in industries, urban sustainability, and energy and climate policy. Earlier work includes rural and urban planning, housing, transport and corporate responsibility as well as promotion of Swedish knowledge and technologies abroad. Has developed and managed projects in collaboration with academics, development banks, policy makers and the private sector in both industrialized and developing countries in various continents. Developed and launched first master's program focused on sustainability and delivered in English at KTH in 1990s (EESI). Has been board member of companies and advised in various research committees. Won Jabuti Prize 2001 in Brazil, category physical sciences, technology and informatics for the book Electricity for Sustainable Development, published in Portuguese.

  • Strategies for sustainable bioenergy development in Indonesia, with budget MSEK 7.04 from Swedish Energy Agency and cooperation with Energy Council and UGM in Indonesia (2014-2017).

  • Smart city concepts in Curitiba – innovation for sustainable mobility and energy efficiency, with budget MSEK10, of which MSEK 5.0 from VINNOVA (2014-2017). In cooperation with VOLVO BUS, SAAB, municipality of Curitiba, and local universities in Brazil.

  • Robust energy and climate indicators for the steel industry, with budget from the Swedish Energy Agency (2013-2015) and strong cooperation with Swedish iron and steel industry.

  • Bioethanol strategy for Indonesia budget from Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) (2012-2014)

  • Urban and industrial waste to energy – promoting sustainable development in Bolivia with biogas, with budget from NCF (Nordic Climate Fund) (2011-2014).

  • Sustainable urban smart grids – opening markets for new products and services in Brazil, prospection of business opportunities, seed fund of from VINNOVA (2013).

  • Biogas based poly-generation for rural development in Bangladesh with budget from Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) (2012-2014).

  • Global Energy and Climate Studies, establishment of ECS with budget of from the Swedish Energy Agency (2007-2012).

  • Energy Economics and modelling at KTH, MSEK 1.5 from Swedish Energy Agency for developing topic at KTH (2009-2010).

  • Competitive renewable gas options, in cooperation with Fortum Värme AB, (2009-2010).

  • Climate and Africa project, for development of African positions to COP1, in cooperation with African organizations and policy makers,(1994-1995), funded by the Swedish Ministry of Environment.
