    Studied geology/palaeontology and geophysics in Göttingen and Freiburg, Germany; Diplom degree in geology from the University of Göttingen, Germany; completed the doctorate in Göttingen

  • 1953 – 1990
    Employed at the North Rhine-Westphalian State Office of Geology (now known as the NRW Geological Service), ultimately as the geological director

    Visiting researcher in Europe, Israel, Egypt, USA, USSR/Russia, China

  • Since 1990
    In retirement

Membership in scientific bodies/juries

  • Reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Fonds national de la recherche scientifique (FNRS), Belgium

  • Member, and periodically chairperson, of the Subcommission on Carboniferous Stratigraphy, working group on the Devonian–Carboniferous boundary, within the International Union of Geological Sciences, Commission on Stratigraphy

  • Member of the German Professional Association of Geoscientists (BDG), and president from 1989 – 1993

Additional interests

  • I continue to follow the research in geology and palaeontology with interest, if only passively.

Soft Skills

  • After retiring, I served for two years as a volunteer tutor helping pupils of the nearby primary school with their homework.
