Short CV/Education and training

  • My predoctoral experience began in January 2005 at the University of Huelva as an FPI Fellow of the Ministry of Education and Science (MEC) where I worked with molecular biology techniques in the area of microalgal biotechnology. During my stay, we were able for the first time to manipulate the carotenogenesis pathway in algae and generate new strains of Chlamydomonas capable of synthesizing new carotenoids in vivo and increasing their productivity (León et al., 2007; Couso et al., 2011; Couso et al., 2012a). This work helped me to be recognized as the best doctoral thesis at the University of Huelva in 2011 and the AIQB award. In addition, I was able to enjoy two stays at the University College of London funded by the MEC . During my first postdoctoral stay at the University of Seville (2009-2012), we described the carotenoids synthesis pathway in Chlorella zofingiensis using molecular biology techniques (Couso et al., 2012b). During this time, I participated in several publications as a co- author at the University of Huelva (1) and at the University of Seville (3). I also collaborated with the group of Dr Crespo (CSIC) studying the regulation of carotenoids synthesis and the process of autophagy in Chlamydomonas (Pérez-Pérez et al., 2012). At this time, we maintained a collaboration with the German company COGNIS GmbH for the application of microalgae in the production of short chain fatty acids. In September 2012, I joined the Danforth Plant Science Center (MO, USA) within the CABS consortium (funded by US Department of Energy). During my postdoctoral stay in Dr Umen's lab, we managed to find a novel relationship between the central C flux, TOR and inositol polyphosphates in microalgae and we evaluated their impact in the production of biofuels (Couso et al., 2016; US Patent). During this time, I participated as a mentor and supervisor of different projects for students of the Washington University in St Louis (Doctorate Program), University of Missouri (REU) as well as high school students (STARS). I also participated as a lecturer in Michigan State Agricultural Biotech Short Course. In 2015, I worked with Dr. Crespo and the KRIBB (a shared contract between KRIBB and CSIC) to establish the regulation of autophagy, its application in the production of biofuels and developing a tool for the measurement of autophagic flux (Couso et al., 2018).

  • In 2016, I worked as the PI of the SACCO2 project from the ComFuturo program funded by the Fund. General del CSIC to advance in the application of microalgae in CO2 capturing. In this project, we found the relationship between the uptake of CO2 in green algae and the levels of inositol polyphosphates in Chlorella cells (Couso et al., submitted). Since 2018, I am an MSCA- IF researcher within the INSPirAUTOR project and I am studying the interaction between the signaling pathways of the inositol polyphosphates and TOR, how they regulate autophagy and the synthesis of lipids and carotenoids. Recently, we have described how P starvation stress is regulated by TOR in photosynthetic organisms (Couso et al., 2020). Recently, I have participated in two collaborations where we describe the Chlamydomonas phosphoproteome/ kinome in different conditions (Werth et al., 2017; Werth et al., 2019).
