Study of the energy transport and dissipation processes on the nanoscale in metals, dielectrics and heterosystems after strong localized electronic excitations to gain a better understanding of ion-surface interaction using ion beams created at accelerator facilities (GANIL, GSI) and in an EBIT. The results will help to establish methods for the controlled modification of surfaces or nanostructures and their properties by swift, heavy and highly charged ion irradiation. Sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
