Terms of Use

1. Scope

The following conditions of use apply to all of the services offered by and contents of the AcademiaNet websites.

2. Access to the websites / accessibility

The Robert Bosch Stiftung mbH (Bosch Foundation), the Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH ("Spektrum" in the following) and, from January 1st 2020 onwards, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) guarantee access to the website "AcademiaNet" via the URLs www.academia-net.de, www.academia-net.org, www.academianet.de, www.academia-net.com, www.academia-net.info, www.academia-net.net. Both the Internet and other electronic networks are independent from AcademiaNet.

The database is managed by Spektrum. Spektrum does not guarantee that the online service AcademiaNet will be available, uninterrupted, without error or timely at all times. It is possible that there could be delays in accessing or transmitting information on the websites due to technical difficulties beyond Spektrum's control. This could also occur due to required maintenance of the online service. Spektrum will schedule maintenance to be carried out during the night when possible.

3. Registration

You can use the AcademiaNet websites at any time without registering or creating an account.

In order to view the contact information of the academics participating in AcademiaNet, though, you must register and provide some personal data (name, possibly company, e-mail address) before we are able to provide the service requested. We will notify you if this is the case.

During registration, a personalised account will be created with a log-in name and password. Do not provide the log-in name and password to a third party. Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH is not responsible for activity on the web sites associated with a particular log-in name and password.

If you discover misuse of a user account, notify Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH immediately. If you discover that your account has been misused, you are required to change your password immediately. Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH is not liable for damages arising from the unauthorised or improper use of a password-protected log-in.

Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH retains the right to deny access to the use of the password-protected area of AcademiaNet in the case of violations of these terms of use.

Users can request that their online user accounts for the AcademiaNet online sites be deleted at any time. Once the account has been deleted, the deleted user data can no longer be used to access the password-protected areas. When the user account is cancelled, the user's data is deleted completely.

4. Liability and guarantee

The contents of AcademiaNet have been carefully compiled either by the women academics listed on AcademiaNet themselves or by Spektrum at the request of the women academics listed. Spektrum does not assume any liability for the correctness, completeness or currentness of the information provided, nor for its availability.

Nor does Spektrum assume liability for the usefulness of the data to the user.

The user shall use the data provided at his/her own risk. Spektrum does not accept responsibility in the case that use of the data leads to allegations that the user has committed criminal acts.

Spektrum does not have any influence on the selection of the women academics nominated for AcademiaNet. The women academics are selected by our partners in academia and industry. These partners have appointed a steering committee for the selection of the candidates; this committee has set the selection criteria for nominating the academics. The explicit consent of the academics is required for their participation in AcademiaNet and for their data to be included in it. For this reason, Spektrum makes no claims for the completeness of the database.

5. User fees or other types of charges

There are no costs associated with the use of AcademiaNet. Any costs incurred for accessing the Internet are the responsibility of the user.

6. Content

If and when the user provides or gives access to content to Spektrum on the Internet or on another network, he or she is required to comply with all applicable legal regulations, administrative instructions, contractual provisions and standards. In particular, the user must comply with existing copyrights. It is the responsibility of the user to continuously inform him- or herself of the applicable provisions.

The user must release Spektrum from potential claims against Spektrum by third parties on the basis of the user’s infringement on the rights of third parties. Moreover, the user must also compensate Spektrum for all damages and reasonable legal expenses incurred by Spektrum in connection with such a claim by a third party.

The user must show consideration for the cultural, religious and personal concerns of third parties when providing and disseminating his or her content, and may not provide or disseminate content that is illegal, harmful or offensive.

The user guarantees that he or she holds the necessary rights to distribute his or her content. This granting of rights is free of charge and not transferrable, and it includes the right to revise and reproduce the content.

7. Copyright

The information distributed by Spektrum is protected by copyright. Use of this information is subject to the applicable laws pertaining to copyright and intellectual property. Users pledge to recognise and respect these laws. Search results that have been downloaded or printed out are allowed for the private or otherwise personal use of the user, or in the case of information intermediates, for the individual use of the person who requested it. This downloaded or printed information may not be used for anything but private or otherwise personal use, and it particularly may not be transferred to a third party, be transmitted electronically or otherwise, be publicly posted or be republished without the prior written consent of Spektrum and the Bosch Foundation and, from January 1st 2020 onwards, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Users may not remove copyright symbols, trademark symbols or other legal reservations from data that has been retrieved.

8. Privacy statement

It is very important to us to treat personal data with care. Please note our data protection provisions.

9. Changes and additions to individual conditions

Spektrum is authorised to make changes or add to this agreement and/or the services provided by Spektrum, to the extent that users consider these changes and additions reasonable when taking into account the interests of Spektrum and other users. If users do not agree to the changes and additions, they can cancel this agreement within one month from the date of notification of the changes.

10. Applicable law, place of fulfilment, partial invalidity

This agreement is subject to the law of the Federal Republic of Germany. Heidelberg is the place of fulfilment. For all legal disputes arising from and in connection with this agreement, the place of jurisdiction is Heidelberg, if the user is a merchant (Kaufmann as defined by the German Commercial Code), a legal person under public law or a separate fund under public law. Spektrum is also authorised, however, to bring an action against a user at the place where he or she is resident or is employed.

If one of the conditions should no longer be in effect, either in part or in whole, the rest of the agreement will continue to be in effect.
